We had whitelisting setup when we started off, but I'm starting to think that it's un-necessary and is just a bother for new players.

As long as we have:
  • Large enough administration team
  • Protection for areas

We should be fine!

Currently we have CreeperHeal which heals tnt and creeper damages.
We also have a setting in EssentialsProtect which prevents fire from spreading.
We'd just need to at least replace EssentialsProtect with WorldGuard to protect cities, spawn areas, railway system etc.

What are your thoughts on this matter?

After having spoken to you on IRC about it, you already know my thoughts, and that is I agree entirely, WorldGuard needs to be there though so we don't have griefers attacking essential areas

Well, aslong as we have a report system and admins/mods online, I dont mind.

The problem is that we can't control random lava/water placement :/

Hmm true... water's alright but lava really does suck.
We could uhm... blacklist lava?! but I love incinerators.

No problem with it as long we got protection against illegal items and griefing. I would like to join the server and meet a few new players.

Would it be possible to allow players that didn't pay? I have some friends that play minecraft a lot but don't wanna pay.
I would understand that more griefers can join, but maybe we can still have a whitelist. But just with an always-accept policy or something like that..

Players using cracks can only be allowed in by disabling the Minecraft auth on the server.
This allows impersonating which allows the following

    • By-passing the whitelist (by using a whitelisted nickname)
    • Confusion ingame
    • Impossible to ban users
    • Banning of users who have never been to the server / never did anything to be banned.

Just a thought, we can keep whitelisting if whitelisting can be done quickly.
    And I mean, quickly.

For this I will start writing a Vanilla2 plugin which works with Bukkit.
No idea when I'll start but I'll let you know when it's done.

Edit: Better idea, whitelist once a forum user adds his/her IGN. Whitelisting will include authing with minecraft.net as well as checking if it is a paid account.
